I am now in my second year at the Fashion Institute of Technology. There are many things I wish I knew before starting college that I would like to share with those who are just starting college or will be starting soon.
1. Time Management Is Essential.
I have always been told how hard it is to have free time in college. I did not realize how accurate this was until I experienced it for myself. When it comes to the weekend or any “free time” during the week, I am way too tired to do anything at all. I try my hardest to do fun activities when I can. I mean come on; I live in Manhattan for God’s sake. I should be able to see the city and have something new to do every day. Yet it seems that I am always stuck in my room or a classroom, with a million different assignment deadlines running through my brain. I had to learn how to manage my time, so I am able to get my assignments done, while still being able to have fun.
2. The First Time You Get Sick, Will Be The Worst.
Even though you will be 18 years old, when you get sick for the first time in college, all you will want is your mom and dad. I remember the first week of college I had a really bad cold. I had to drag myself to the drug store, spend around 30 dollars on medicine and tissues, and just laid in my bed sulking. I just wanted to be home, in my own bed.
3. Groceries Are Expensive!
Now that I live in an apartment-style dorm, I have to buy my own groceries… and damn are they expensive. (especially living in Manhattan) A very small container of pineapple is $8!!! Crazy, I know. Now I just go food shopping back home and bring groceries back to my dorm.
4. Freshman 15 Is Real!
Freshman 15 always sounded like a myth to me, but it is 100 % true. Maybe not 15 pounds but I definitely see a huge change in my body since I started college, and I hate it. If I can give a tip to anyone, it would be to buy healthy snacks! Do not make the mistake of binge eating junk food because you’re stressed, like I did. You will regret it in the long run.
5. Write Down Everything.
Your professors do not provide you with every bit of information you need. There are no review classes like there were in high school. Some professors do not even make a powerpoint presentation. They will verbally teach you the lesson with no information to copy. Write down everything important you hear. Also, make sure you write down any important headlines and homework, because chances are they will not remind you.
